Dogs that like going to the woods or always out on a hike usually tend to have ticks. Whenever you noticed that you dog may have ticks, it is preferable to prevent him from playing with the other pets because the ticks can affect the others too.

Tick creams and lotion are good at killing the tick, but the  fact is the dead tick remain on the dog's fur and that is still causing the itchy feeling on the dog. He may still be scratching even though the ticks are dead.

It is not a good idea to remove the ticks with tweezers. This is because certain types of ticks can easily attach themselves to humans. Another problem with tweezers is that they may burst the tick's body, that may release certain substances from the tick that may be poisonous to the dog, you don't want that to happen.

The best way to remove dog ticks from your dog is to use your hand. Before that you will need to equip yourself with surgical gloves and long sleeved shirt. You can put several sheet of newspaper on the floor and let your dog sit on it. You can now search through your dog's body and look for the tick that may have found their way on your dog's body. In case you find one, be careful to remove it very slowly with your hand. Pinch and then twist it in a counter clockwise direction while pulling outwards.

Avoid applying too much pressure on the tick in order to prevent the tick's body to burst open. If you are finding it difficult to take them out, then you may apply more pressure until you are really able to detach them from your dog's body. Once the tick is removed, you have to get rid of it. One option is to crush them on the pages of newspapers or you can put them in a bowl filled with bleach then flush it later in the toilet.

ood, as much as they want. Sometimes they stick themselve so hardly on your dog's body that it is so hard to remove them. Remember, once you've taken the tick out, there are small wounds left on your dog's skin, you will need to take care of that too. Use antiseptics like Dettol and Germolene to disinfect the wounds.

Ticks are in their prime during April to October. During this time of the year, it is preferable to avoid taking your dog to the woods or open fields. Because ticks love warmer weather, the only moment when they can't thrive is during the winter. If in case you really have to take your faithful dog for a hike during the summer, at least give it some protection from these parasites.

There are also natural tick repellant, they are vinegar and garlic. Just add some few drops of vinegar to your dog's drinking water and that's it. Tick-repelling collars are widely available these days too. Be sure to attach it to your pet whenever you two would like to have fun under the sun.
